The better to see you with...
One of the great things about emergency medicine is the ability to incorporate ultrasound as an extension of the physical exam. Ultrasound is not just for babies folks! We can use it to see clearly through the skin to diagnose numerous conditions.
After getting this image, the patient went back for emergency laser surgery. Any guesses about what this person's problem was?

ReplyDeleteAn eyeball it is. The lens is the sliver at the top of the image. The black circle is the fluid filled eyeball and the teardrop shaped dark shape at the bottom of the picture is a slice of the optic nerve that connects the eye with the brain. The problem here is that the retina (at the back of the eye & at the bottom of the image) should be smooth. This one looks blistered so is a case of retinal detachment. It can lead to blindness if not fixed quickly.
Ultrasound puts a whole new meaning to "I'm looking deep into your eyes..."
